Understanding Project Limits

Free accounts can save up to 3 projects. Pro accounts have unlimited saved projects.

Free Account Limits

With a free PlayCode account, you can:

  • Code unlimited - No restrictions on coding in the playground
  • Save up to 3 projects - Keep your work saved and accessible
  • Edit saved projects anytime - No limit on editing existing projects

What Happens When I Hit the Limit?

When you try to save your 4th project, you'll see a modal showing your existing projects with options to:

  1. Delete an existing project - Free up a slot for your new project
  2. Upgrade to Pro - Get unlimited projects for $9.99/month

You can still code in the playground without saving. The limit only applies to saved projects.

What Counts as a Project?

A project counts toward your limit when:

  • You click "Save" or Cmd/Ctrl + S
  • The project is stored in your account
  • It appears in your dashboard

These do NOT count:

  • Unsaved playground sessions
  • Templates (you can use any template anytime)
  • Deleted projects
  • Shared projects you don't own

Grandfathering Policy

If you already have more than 3 projects, you keep them all!

When we introduced the 3-project limit in December 2025, we implemented a grandfathering policy to protect existing users. Here's how it works:

If You Have 10 Projects (for example)

  • ✅ You can view and edit all 10 projects
  • ✅ You can update and republish all 10 projects
  • ✅ All your work stays safe and accessible
  • ❌ You cannot save an 11th project (without upgrading or deleting one)

This applies to everyone with more than 3 projects before the limit was introduced. You won't lose any existing work.

Want to Add More Projects?

You have two options:

  1. Delete old projects - Archive or delete projects you no longer need to free up slots
  2. Upgrade to Pro - Get unlimited projects for $9.99/month or $99/year

How to Manage Your Projects

You can see how many projects you have in:

  • Dashboard header - Shows "2/3 projects" for free users
  • Project limit modal - Shows all your projects when you hit the limit

Deleting Projects

To delete a project:

  1. Go to your dashboard
  2. Click the three dots (•••) on a project card
  3. Select "Delete"
  4. Confirm deletion

Deleted projects are removed immediately and free up a slot for a new project.

Why This Limit?

PlayCode is free to use with unlimited coding because we want you to learn and experiment without barriers. The 3-project limit ensures we can sustain free hosting and storage while keeping the platform accessible to everyone.

Our goal is simple: Let you love PlayCode first, then upgrade when you're ready for professional features.

Common Questions

Can I export my projects instead of saving them?

Yes! You can download any project as a ZIP file from the editor menu. This doesn't count toward your saved project limit.

What if I temporarily need a 4th project?

Consider deleting an old project you're not actively using. You can always recreate it later from a ZIP export if needed.

Do shared/collaboration projects count?

Only projects you own count toward your limit. If someone shares a project with you, it doesn't affect your count.
